Position Description

The Assistant Hall Director (AHD) position provides an excellent opportunity to to learn and develop the expertise, skills and experiences needed to function effectively in a residence hall environment, prepare for a career in student affairs, or hone the leadership and administrative skills necessary in other fields of work.

The Assistant Hall Director position is a nine-month position with opportunities for summer employment. Assistant Hall Directors are located in traditional, suite or apartment-style undergraduate residence halls. Assistant Hall Directors are responsible for assisting the Hall Director as needed, including but not limited to directly hiring, training, supervising and evaluating the 24-hour desk staff, post office staff, advising the hall government, and assisting with the supervision of the Resident Assistant staff. Assistant Hall Directors also serve on one departmental committee.

Other responsibilities associated with the Assistant Hall Director position include:

  • Providing leadership in an atmosphere that supports academic achievement, fosters responsible decision making, and encourages personal growth and development
  • Coordinating community and student development through assisting in social and educational programming, development of special interest communities, and hearing student conduct cases
  • Providing advice and counsel to individual students, student leaders and student groups
  • Participating in an on-call duty rotation to address student crisis and facilities issues in the residence hall
  • Assisting in instruction of credit bearing training course for RA's
  • Serving on at least one departmental committee

Several administrative graduate assistantships are also available in programming, public relations, and United Residence Hall Council advisor.

Compensation

The Assistant Hall Director position receives the following compensation:

  • $848.06 per month stipend
  • Full tuition waiver (including out-of-state tuition)
  • Free 12-month student health insurance
  • Opportunities for summer and holiday employment
  • Furnished suite with private bath, local phone service, utilities, cable television, micro-fridge, and living area cleaned weekly by housekeeping staff
  • Free use of staff laundry
  • Full meal plan with access to all campus dining facilities

Qualifications

  • Previous residence hall living experience or other student affairs leadership experience
  • Enrollment in a graduate or professional program at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and enrolled in no more than 12 credit hours per semester
  • Demonstrated commitment and ability to work with diverse student body and staff

Professional Development Opportunities

  • Assistance with student, graduate assistant, and professional staff recruitment
  • Teach a class for prospective Resident Assistants
  • In-service training and development programs throughout the year
  • Departmental and Division of Student Affairs professional development seminars
  • Advise student organizations
  • Represent University Housing during admissions fairs, summer orientation, and other campus committees and events
