Resident Assistant - Recruitment
Selection Decisions
The Selection Process consists of a four-part process---on-line application review, group process, individual interviews and RA Class. Communication will be via e-mail and regular mail during the process (off-campus candidates should be prepared to pick up information letters at 405 Student Services Building during regular 8:00 am 5:00 pm operating hours). All applicants should check their e-mail and mail regularly to ensure successful participation in the RA Selection process.
Online Application Review
Each part of the application packet will be carefully reviewed and evaluated. Candidates are encouraged to take significant care in the preparation and completion of their application. Even though the application is an online form, please take the time to check the application thoroughly for spelling, grammar, and detail. Each candidates eligibility will be checked by verifying the candidates cumulative grade point average (GPA) with the Registrars Office and a list of candidate's names sent to the Office of Student Judicial Affairs for review at the time of application.
Group Process
Candidates will participate in a three-hour group process activity with 6-8 other candidates. The group will be given three different activities to complete during the allotted time. The process will be evaluated by a four-person team of Hall Directors, Assistant Hall Directors and Resident Assistants. Each member of the evaluation team will evaluate each candidate.
The Group Process activities will take place in the University Center. Each person should report to the Shiloh Room at the beginning of the session. Candidates will select the day and time they want to participate at the sign up meeting. See the timeline for more information.
Individual Interview
Every individual that submits a complete and eligible application online will receive a thirty-minute interview with members of the Department of University Housing. During this interview, candidates will be asked a variety of questions assessing their knowledge of the Resident Assistant position, the skills and abilities each candidate possesses.
Candidates will be interviewed, on an individual basis by a four-person panel consisting of Hall Directors, Assistant Hall Director and Resident Assistants. Candidates should be sure to read all materials thoroughly and be prepared to answer questions concerning their essay from the online application.
Interviews for candidates will be held in each residence hall on campus. Candidates will choose their interview date and time at the sign up meetings. See the timeline for the dates.
Resident Assistant Class
Candidates selected for RA Class will meet on Sunday, February 10 at 2:00 pm in the University Center Auditorium. The candidate will determine his/her class schedule based on his/her time. The RA Class will allow the University Housing staff a chance to get to know participants in order to make sound hiring and placement decisions. Final placement decisions with regard to building and floor are made after the completion of the class. Participation in the RA Class is a part of the selection process and does not guarantee a candidate a Resident Assistant position.
Alternate Status
Two things usually happen during the course of a selection process:
- The candidate pool will often yield more qualified candidates than there are vacancies to fill,
- and vacancies will continue to occur throughout the year.
Alternates make an initial investment in us and we make a long-term investment in them. After the RA Class, some applicants will become alternates in case future vacancies occur. There is no guarantee that all alternates who go through RA Class will ultimately get a position; however, only trained alternates will be considered through Fall Break 2008.
