Current Residents – It's Your Home
Welcome to your new home! We want you to feel comfortable in your new room. We also want to make sure your room is safe and secure. Before you do anything in your room, look over the guidelines, tips, and ideas for turning your residence hall room into your new home.
Can I Decorate My Room?
- Yes! Students are encouraged to personalize their rooms to make them more like home. There are various things that can be done to accomplish this:
- Carpet. Carpet is a great way to personalize your room. You may bring carpet or rugs from home or you may purchase when you arrive on campus. Carpet sales are sponsored by the United Residence Halls Council and are located in various courtyards. Nylon, Antron and Sisel carpet are the most durable types of carpeting. Consider putting down a layer of padding for noise reduction and increased comfort. Do not use adhesive tape to hold down carpets. Our experience is that it does not come off of the tile after removing the carpet.
- Furniture. Furniture that is not affixed to the floor may be moved and arranged as you like as long as the door is not blocked. You may add items such as a chair or TV; however, furniture may not be moved from your room. You may remove your bed frame if you have written permission from your hall director. You are responsible for seeing that all furniture is in the room at the time of checkout.
- Posters, Pictures, Flags, Etc... These are a great way to liven up your room, but don’t attach them with material that damages the walls such as nails, tacks, industrial tape, contact paper or wall paper. Posters, pictures, flags and other items may not be attached to or hung from the ceiling.
Can I Paint My Room?
No, residents may not paint their own room. However, you may request to have your room painted by completing a work order at your hall’s front desk. These requests will be completed on a first-come first-served basis.
What About Bunk Beds?
Bunk beds are a great way to create space in your room. If you are going to construct a bunk bed, you must follow the specific safety guidelines which are available here. Bunk beds must be approved by the hall director. Bunk beds must be disassembled and your bed completely reassembled prior to the week of final exams for both Fall and Spring Semesters or wait until the last day of scheduled exams during each semester.
Can I Have Plants Or Pets?
- Plants. Plants can add color and cheer to any room
and they can help reduce odors. Some of the best plants for a residence
hall room are bamboo palms, closet or spath plants, Egyptian Lilies
and philodendrons.
Plants that are especially good for the environment include spider plants, peace lilies, Chinese evergreens, weeping figs and golden pothos.
These plants are natural pollution fighters and are relatively easy to grow. - Pets. Pets are not allowed in the residence halls because of health, sanitation, and noise concerns. The only exceptions are fish and guide dogs accompanying sight impaired persons.
Windows and Doors
- Windows. The windows in air-conditioned halls must remain closed at all times. This policy was adopted to keep the weather seal around your window from being broken (and allowing rain to leak in) and to help regulate the temperature and humidity level in your building.
- Doors. Due to fire and safety considerations, furniture and personal possessions must be arranged so that they do not obstruct the full opening of your room door.
Maintenance Requests
Preventative Maintenance staff are assigned to each hall to make necessary repairs in rooms and in common areas. If you need an item fixed in your room, complete a maintenance request form at the main desk of your hall. Maintenance staff will leave a card in your room to notify you that they were in the room to make repairs.
