Why Live in a Residence Hall Community?

One of the best predictors of success in college is how involved you are and how much you feel a part of the campus. The University of Tennessee offers freshman students six exciting living options called learning communities. One of these communities may be just right for you:

The Communities at Morrill:
The Pathways Community
The Honors Community
The Engage Community
The Design Community
The CASNR Community
The Baker Center Community

Each community is unique in both design and requirements. However, all offer opportunities to connect with other students, to become involved in campus life, and to develop skills necessary to be both a successful student and a successful leader.

What can I expect?

You can expect to live in one of the most active and involved communities on campus. Former learning community students have tutored children at an elementary school, volunteered at the Love Kitchen to feed those in need, and worked with patients on the cancer ward of Children’s Hospital. By living together on one floor of a residence hall, you will have the opportunity to take classes together, study together, participate as a floor in cultural and educational programs, intramurals, and become involved in community events and social activities.

Program Series and Cost for all Six Communities

In addition to taking classes with members of the community, you may also participate in a special series of social, cultural, and educational programs. Previous programs have included free tutoring sessions, plays, hiking trips, and whitewater rafting. The purpose of these programs is both to introduce you to the diverse opportunities that UT and the Knoxville area have to offer and to help you get to know other community members, staff, and faculty.

A $50 program fee is required of each member of a community to cover the cost of most community events. By paying this one-time fee in advance, you will be able to attend all of the programs without having to purchase an individual ticket for each event. For larger events, such as camping or out-of-town trips, students may have to pay a portion of the cost. The $50 program fee will be billed to the student on the VolXpress statement and the student should be aware the fee will be deducted from their financial aid.

Disabled Student Accommodations

If you have any physical limitations requiring special accomodations, please attach a note to your housing application describing those limitations. Students with physical disabilities will be given comparable and accessible housing. You must also contact Disability Services, 2227 Dunford Hall; Knoxville, TN 37996; (865)974-6087 (TDD available).
