Purpose
To administer and coordinate the residence life activities associated
with a designated group of residence halls and apartment complexes at the
University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
Responsibilities
Responsible for the comprehensive student life program in an
area of six or more residence halls including the supervision
of full times and student staff in each building. Serves as an
integral part of the Department's Central staff, responsible for
formulating departmental policies and implementing programs and
procedures designed to provide a high level service to residents.
Principle Duties
- Directly supervise six or more full-time Hall Directors,
one Graduate Assistant and the Area Secretary
- Serves on Hall Director and Resident Manager Search Committee,
which recommend appointments to the Executive Director of University
Housing and the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs
- Assists with the selection process for the Resident Assistants,
Assistant Hall Directors and Graduate Assistants in the area
Recommends Assistant Hall Director, Graduate-Assistant, and Resident
Assistant appointments to the Assistant Director of University
Housing
- Directly responsible for evaluating the Hall Directors, Graduate
Assistants and Secretary reporting to the Area Assistant Director. Coordinates
the evaluation process of Assistant Hall Directors, Resident
Assistants and Senior Secretaries in the area
- Recommends salary increases, promotions and terminations
to the Assistant Director of University Housing
- With the Assistant Director plans and implements training
workshops for all residence life staff
- Works with the Assistant Director to develop on-going staff
development programs for Hall Directors and Graduate Assistants
- Participates in the planning and implementation of the training
course for Resident Assistants
- Oversees the consistent enforcement of all university rules
and regulations in the residence halls in their area and meets
with students to discuss infractions when necessary
- Insures that activities are provided for resident students
that foster personal and community development, based on Wellness
philosophy
- Consults with advisors of hall government associations on
program and project planning
- Monitors the budgets of area halls and recommends appropriate
adjustments.
- During the summer, assists in the coordination of special
projects, assists with the summer conference program, or coordinates
the summer school housing program, including staff selection
and the administration of all activities associated with these
programs
- Advises and/or serves on various departmental committees
including the Selection, Staff Recognition, Training, and Diversity
Education
- Represents the Department of University Housing on university-wide
committees when appropriate
- Investigates and responds to concerns and complaints of
students, parents, university staff members and others in such
manner as to provide accurate information and foster good public
relations
- Insures that benchmarking satisfaction surveys are distributed
and the results are utilized in the hall's operations
- Prepares reports regarding the operations and activities
of the area halls for the Assistant Director
as is appropriate
- Recommends facility improvements and participates in developing
short and long range plans for maintaining and improving the
physical facilities
- Participates in policy formulation for the Department of
University Housing and serves as part of the central management
team
- Represents the university in appropriate regional and national
professional organizations
- Responsible for coordination of special interest housing
programs within their area.
- Hears appeals from students in their area wanting to be released
from their housing contracts or appeals on billed damages
- Oversee and maintain an area programming resource office
- Coordinate departmental community service and Campus Chest
projects
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant Director
or Executive Director of University Housing
