Residence Hall Main Desk

Each residence hall has a main desk area located in the lobby that is open 24 hours a day. The desk areas are staffed by residence hall clerks, Resident assistants and desk assistants and its operation is supervised by the assistant hall director.

Telephone Service

Your room has an active voice (telephone) outlet (port). Any digital phone will work when plugged into the voice port in the room. As students indicated a preference for bringing their own phones with various attachments (like message recorders), the telephone instruments were removed. However, the voice outlet is active and local telephone service is included in the room rate. Residents cannot accept collect or bill long distance calls from, or to the room. Optional long distance service is provided by Volunteer Connection and those interested in this service should direct questions to the link provided or that office at (865) 974-3121.

On-Campus Dialing

Administrative lines use a 974 prefix, while residence hall rooms have a 595 or 266 prefix. To call any on-campus line, dial the last five digits of the number. For example, to call the University Housing Central Office, 974-2571, all you should dial is 4-2571.

Off-Campus Dialing

  • To dial an off-campus local number, dial 8 + the number. For toll free calls, you also dial 8 + 1-800 or 1-888 or 1-877-number.
  • You may not accept collect calls or bill long distance calls to your room. Residents of a room billed for a long distance call will share responsibility for payment of the call plus a $25 administrative charge for investigation and assessment of the costs.
  • A long distance service is available to residence hall students: The Volunteer Connection. To use the Volunteer Connection, you may establish an account by calling telephone services at 4-8006 or going by 9 Humanities Building.

Operator Assisted Calls

For operated assisted calls including outgoing collect calls, dial 8+0+(area code)+number. The student directory will be distributed approximately four to six weeks after the semester begins. You may also call the front desk to reach someone living in a residence hall. For campus information dial 4-1000 or “0” for the campus operator between 8 AM and 6 PM.

Mail Delivery and Packages

Post offices are located in all residence halls. Mail is delivered every day except Sundays and Holidays. If you receive a package, a notice will be placed in your box, and you may pick up the package during posted hours. Your mailbox number is the same as your room number (except Gibbs):

Your Name
Your Box Number
Your Hall Street Address
Knoxville, TN 37916

Laundry Facilities

Washing machines and dryers are located in each hall. The desk staff can tell you where they are located. Washers and dryers are operated by card readers using your VolCard. You must open an AllStar Plus Account through the VolCard office (472 South Stadium Hall). The cost to wash or dry a load of laundry is seventy-five cents. Please remember to remain with your belongings at all times. We cannot be responsible for lost or stolen items.

Equipment Check-Out

A variety of athletic equipment, games, cleaning supplies and kitchen utensils may be checked out at the main desk of your hall with identification (NOT YOUR VolCard). Some equipment may be checked out by presenting identification, while others are property of the hall association and require a membership card for check out. Items vary so consult your main desk. Use of computer rooms, music rooms, kitchens, sunroofs and other areas will require a drivers’ license.

Housekeeping

Generally, residents are responsible for their room, suite or apartment areas. All public areas of the residence halls are cleaned on a regular basis by the housekeeping staff. Your cooperation with these staff members will aid them in making your environment a more attractive and pleasant place to live. Community bathrooms are cleaned by the housekeeping staff daily, while suite baths are cleaned once-a-week by the staff. In the Apartment Residence Hall, residents are responsible for cleaning their apartment.

Vending Machines

Most vending machines operate either with cash or with your VolCard provided you may have an AllStar Plus account. Refunds for money lost in a vending machine may be requested at the main desk. You will receive a refund in your mailbox shortly after reporting the loss. Please report when a vending machine is out of order to the main desk. This will help us provide a better service to you.

Maintenance Requests & Repairs

The Physical Plant provides preventive maintenance personnel in each hall who work in conjunction with the housekeeping and residence life staff to provide you with a safe and comfortable environment. To request a repair, fill out a maintenance request slip located at the hall main desk and leave it there for the maintenance staff to pick up.

Cable Connections

Bring your Television! Telephone Services offers cable television (VolVision) in all residence hall rooms at a reasonable semester rate. VolVision offers 70 channels including MTV, ESPN, The History Channel, TLC, WTBS, BET, CMT, and others. All residence hall lobby televisions have VolVision cable service.
